Sketch Notes vs. Mind Maps

Sketch Notes vs. Mind Maps

I think most of us know what a mind map is, so I won’t go into process. One new thing I’ve been getting into lately though are sketch notes. Which one is better? Paper or software? The answer is that there is no right answer. Both are a necessary component before beginning a project (for me at least). They help me to organize my thoughts and think of new ideas. I enjoy sketch notes because as a visual person, I can find the important piece of information I need quickly. They also help me to remember better so that’s another plus.

It is very tempting to just hop on the computer and start something. Inevitably, I need to rethink what I was doing or go back and plan, thus increasing my work time. Once I implemented a careful planning process to flesh out exactly what I wanted to say and do, my workflow improved drastically. The next step for a motion design piece is the script and storyboard. I have mentioned this TED talk before, but the guy utilizes sketch notes to present his topic. I think it worked really well and was very creative. Check it out here. I have pages and pages in my sketchbook dedicated to this process and I truly believe it has improved my work for the better and will continue to do so.
